Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Andrew Ahn's remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film is a significant departure, updating the story to make all of its protagonists much closer co-conspirators: Min (Han Gi-Chan) has been hiding his homosexuality from his wealthy family in Korea, and recruits his lesbian friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) into a sham marriage, in exchange for which he will pay for her partner Lee (Lily Gladstone) to have an IVF treatment. His own partner Chris (Bowen Yang) is not thrilled.
This is a very different film than the original, largely because Min is a relatively minor presence. His distant grandfather is a homophobic antagonist rather than a perspective to be understood; the marriage is a prop for Angela and Chris to explore their commitment issues from a thoroughly American perspective. Expect a gay rom-com, not an exploration of cultural difference.
