Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
I didn't think Knives Out deserved its rapturous reception, but I'm glad it was so successful because Rian Johnson's follow-up is a joy. The mystery unfolds in layers, like the titular onion, in the beachfront home of a billionaire hosting his closest friends for a weekend away.
Great, playful performances, surprising twists -- my main criticism is that it feels like Johnson tries to trade on audacious twists while avoiding any genuinely big swings (like the discarded idea for Blanc to have a different accent in every film). The result is a film that feels tame by comparison The Afterparty (in fairness, likely only greenlit because of Knives Out's success).
A great way to spend a Christmas evening.
