Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
I wish I'd seen The VVitch before Robert Eggers' subsequent film, The Lighthouse, because it might have eased me into his brand of weirdness: the affected period language, the psychological uncertainty, the muted palette. A New England family in the early 17th century settle an isolated forest, where a series of accidents cause them to suspect witchcraft. This is a tense, atmospheric thriller -- the type with escalating, drowning unease, rather than jump scares -- elevated to a new level through its resonating themes about feminism, freedom etc. Script, cinematography, performances, all brilliant.
