Full Metal Jacket in Gulf War II Iraq -- life, and death, on the battlefield bomb squad. As a portrayal of life on the ground, the daily grind of soldiers between the violence of conflicts, I found myself drawing unfavourable comparisons to Generation Kill. The patrols, though, the encounters, these are handled with sublime tension.
In a manner of speaking, The Hurt Locker might be the best action movie ever made. Did you ever wonder what crucible could create John Rambo? This is a film about men staring into the abyss, and it's brilliant.
The way I saw it, on a 9" seat-back screen on an economy flight to Hong Kong, was doubtless not ideal, but if it worked there, in the cinema it must have been raw indeed.
