Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
There's a standard set of war flick themes: "war is hell", "the military is dehumanizing", "enlisted men are scapegoats", etc.
Kill doesn't necessarily have a more realistic approach, but it's certainly more naturalistic. The men don't have enough equipment. Their officers are incompetent; the horror comes in brief bursts out of the confusion and the boredom. Not only do you never get to see anyone doing something particularly heroic, you do see a lot of stupidigy, a lot of brutality, and a surprising amount of defecation and masturbation.
The goal is realism, and by all accounts it's worked: it's a remarkably accurate portrayal of Marine culture.
Outstanding.
