Buck (John Candy) babysits his brother's children Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly), Maizy (Gaby Hoffmann) and Miles (Macaulay Culkin) while their parents are out of town. 30 years on, what strikes me most about this film is how far it is from what I would consider the standard formula -- some useless schlub, think Seth Rogen in Knocked Up, embarrasses himself until being shocked into responsibility. But while Buck is embarrassing, chiefly to the obnoxiously teenage Tia, he wears it proudly, with a magnetic confidence, and it's usually done deliberately and with caring intent. He's far from useless. (Possible exception: the washing machine.) When he's abrasive and indelicate it's generally in the mode of telling unpleasant people the kind of thing we all wish we could say.

All of this adds up to a remarkably easy watch -- don't think comedy of humiliation, think Mary Poppins.
