More than 20 years on, it's interesting to see the changing reactions over the years. Should it be praised for its treatment of sexuality as fluid and chaotic, or is it a toxic male fantasy about a man who "turns" a lesbian? Both? It's fair to say that no-one today is terribly interested in a cishet male's perspective on this topic. Kevin Smith's script is earnest and occasionally raw, but also unquestionably limited; some of the dialogue is cringeworthy. But it's also a perfect encapsulation of that perspective, of that time period, and just as with Clerks it's easy to understand how it resonated with audiences of the time.
If it feels now like a movie by a white guy, for other white guys, well that's fine too, perhaps it is cause for celebration that this now feels like a niche and not the entirety of mainstream culture.
