Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
I'd only ever seen Kevin Smith's later work and from that experience had not bothered with Clerks, his first, ultra-low-budget film about Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson), cynical workers in a convenience store and a video rental shop, respectively. It's really quite good: the black and white presentation does help it feel more artful than cheap (like an early Jim Jarmusch) and the not-quite-one-room setting keeps the focus on the dialogue.
It's easy to see how its attitude of cynical alienation resonated with audiences of a certain age, and its humour is essentially a textbook example of the white male culture that defined the internet before it discovered inclusivity. Worth seeing.
