Best Hallowe'en Costume Ever

 #

np312:

I grew up in a college town, and one Halloween our doorbell rang and we opened the door expecting to see trickortreaters-- but what was in front of our open door--was another door! Like, a full-on wooden door, that had a sign that said "Please knock." So we did, and the door swung open to reveal a bunch of college dudes dressed as really old grandmothers, curlers in their hair, etc, who proceeded to coo over our "costumes" and tell us we were "such cute trick or treaters!" One even pinched my cheek. Then THEY gave US candy, closed their door, picked it up and walked to the next house.

It was amazing.

How much is a terabyte in punchcards? fungible does the math

 #

According to his calculations: 1TByte = 8Tbits
1 punch card =960 possible holes(bits), 12 rows X 80 columns.
8Tbits / 960 = 8,333,333,333 punch cards

A punch card is 7.375" X 3.25" X .007" = 0.1677812 cubic in
1 cubic ft = 1728 cubic in = 10,299 cards
8,333,333,333 cards / 10,299 cards = 809,140 cubic ft

and so 809,140 cubic ft x 12 = 9,709,680 cubic ft
(1 cubic mile = 147.2 billion cu ft.)

Glad to be of help.

"Is any bottle of wine worth $700?"

 #

For my money no, but I love writing that lets me understand, even if it's only a little, this kind of passionate obsession:

It was stunning. The glass gave off the most decadent, gorgeous perfume imaginable. There was a kaleidoscopic quality to the nose, with each spin of the glass coaxing forth a new aroma. In no particular order, I smelled hazelnuts, lemons, apples, pears, marzipan, oatmeal, lanolin, petroleum, honey, flowers, toasted oak, and mint. All of these scents were perfectly delineated, yet they also somehow added up to a seamless whole. On the palate, the wine had a rich, oily texture and a Platonic balance of fruit and acidity, all backed by a steel rod of minerality. Think of your favorite painting, or favorite novel, or favorite piece of music--this was it in liquid form.

3-year-old's Jim Lehrer/NewsHour-themed birthday party

 # [via]

The party was over Memorial Day weekend, and the Schallys made all their guests wear the hats [with pictures of NewsHour correspondents on them] Jennifer Schally designed. They got a cake with the photo of the show's correspondents and Jennifer Schally arranged for Jim Lehrer to send an autographed photo for a birthday present.

It read, "To my youngest fan" and was signed, "Jimmy Jimmy BoBo", which is the nickname Henry gave Lehrer.
