With the help of a group of marines returned from Guadalcanal, Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith (Eddie Bracken), who washed out of the corps with chronic hayfever, masquerades as one of their number to make his mother proud. No worries, they say, no-one will know -- and soon the grateful townsfolk have him running for mayor.

Preston Sturges delivers a very funny bit of propaganda, laying on thick the need to support our boys overseas. That villainous Mayor Noble (Raymond Walburn), encourages behaviours that are fine in peacetime, like relaxation and not working at night, which are positively "dishonest" when the country is at war.

But it's very nicely done. Sturges has an ear for dialogue and Conquering Hero is packed with great lines. It's too transparently political to be truly great, but it's a lot of fun.
