The perfect middle-ground between the camp nonsense of Dr. No and the more grounded thrills of From Russia With Love, beginning with an investigation of an ordinary criminal -- Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) -- whose plot only later devolves into Bond silliness. The result is pitch-perfect, iconic Bond, with only the treatment of female characters now standing out as exceptionally dated. And it is impossible now to hear the name Pussy Galore without laughing at her Austin Powers counterpart Alotta Fagina.
