I'd always dismissed the Timothy Dalton Bonds without ever seeing them, but in hindsight this is a remarkably modern pivot to spy action -- vastly closer in tone to the the late Craig era, recent Mission Impossible (or even late Fast and Furious). If the female characters are still not exactly well drawn, Dalton's Bond is at least more believable and well-rounded. The plot involves an arms deal and not a satellite-mounted laser and the action is vastly better than any previous installment.
This is pretty great 80s spy action, sadly encumbered by its legacy.
