Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Clever queer twist on the Dr. Jekyll story, where repressed Victorian scientist Jekyll (Ralph Bates) transforms into sexually liberated femme fatale Hyde (Martine Beswick), who seduces his/her upstairs neighbour Howard Spencer (Lewis Fiander). Spencer's sister Susan (Susan Brodrick) pines for Jekyll, but to Hyde she is just the next victim: the transformation serum requires female hormones harvested from murdered women.
Nicely put together, with some clever camera trickery and makeup to manage the transition from Jekyll to Hyde. The script avoids over-explaining and so leaves itself open to even very modern readings of gender and sexuality. This was on the excellent list of films recommended by Martin Scorcese to Edgar Wright.
