Viewed after hearing Quentin Tarantino talk about it on the Empire podcast with Edgar Wright. Charles Rane (William Devane) returns to a hero's welcome after seven years in a Hanoi POW camp. What little happiness he finds there (his wife has met another man and his son does not remember him) is broken when thieves, having seen him receiving the generosity of the city, violently liberate it from him. The rest is revenge.
The bloody climax is less interesting than what comes before; Rane's return is so uncomfortable that the pivot back to war is almost a relief. Great performances by Devane and Tommy Lee Jones, another returned POW.
