Inspired by Max Brand's violent revenge-Western of the same name, Destry Rides Again sees the son of the famous lawman called in to clean up the town of Bottleneck, run by crooked saloon operator Kent (Brian Donlevy) and lady of ill-repute Frenchy (Marlene Dietrich).

The sheriff is horrified when Destry (James Stewart) arrives without even any guns; as Destry says, someone could get shot. Of course, Destry is iron beneath the meek façade, so things work out.

I think it's notable -- and horrifying -- that Destry is determined to enforce the law (even as Kent cheats and lies to twist it to his own purposes), right up until a cop gets killed, at which point it's time for vigilante justice. Remind you of anything?
