Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
It's hard to imagine a movie more tailored to pander to the Academy than one about Hollywood saving American hostages from the Iranian evil empire, for all that it's revolting, historically bankrupt nonsense. Argo follows the daring escape of six American embassy workers trapped in Iran following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, who were smuggled out using a cover story of a fake movie production.
In reality, this escape was largely a Canadian effort (the Americans hid in the houses of the Canadian ambassador and another Canadian), and in any event was a minor footnote to the larger hostage crisis, where 52 Americans were held for 444 days.
Argo pulls out all the stops to build the action, including a series of crises at the airport (in reality, they breezed through security), all the while implying that it was a CIA operation, with the Canadians given credit only so the hostages would not be executed in retaliation.
Without the weight of historicity, it's just an also-ran thriller.
