Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Adaptation of Yann Martel's novel about a young man (Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel) trapped on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker. Perhaps the key moment in the film comes when Pi, having washed up on a populated shore, is visited in hospital by a team of Japanese investigators. He tells them his story, which they do not believe, so he tells them another, about he and his mother trapped on a boat with a brutal ship's cook. "Which story do you prefer?"
Despite Pi's assertion that his story is one to make you believe in God, that's not the story I prefer. The idea that belief is a choice, however, is important to me, and makes the film for me an easy one to like.
It helps that it's a good script from David Magee (Finding Neverland), and it looks stunning -- special effects used but not overused. Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan are excellent as young and old Pi, respectively.
