Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
The latest film from Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), based on George V. Higgins's novel Cogan's Trade, feels very 70s to me: a naturalistic neo-noir I would describe as "unpleasant things happening to unpleasant people".
Higgins notoriously writes books heavy on the dialogue, which certainly comes through here. It really is excellent dialogue, though, and gives all the stars -- Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn -- a chance to earn their pay.
Tense and engrossing.
