IRA volunteer Fergus (Stephen Rea) takes up with Dil (Jaye Davidson), former lover of a British soldier (Forest Whitaker) whom Fergus had held hostage. It's easy but reductive to say that The Crying Game is most notable for its gender twist, because that twist is part of a larger and more interesting bait-and-switch -- that a political thriller opening with a hostage taken at gunpoint can segue into a story about love transcending boundaries.
