Apparently the entire first season was supposed to be covered in the very first episode; only in season two was Joss given license to pursue the story he had wanted the whole time. It's certainly much more interesting than the first season, but compressing a five year plan into a dozen episodes does leave a lot to be desired.

Season One
An interesting new tack from a writer known for them, Joss Whedon's latest deals with the Dollhouse, a futuristic business based on leasing out mind-wiped men and women "imprinted" with artificial personalities. Echo (Eliza Dushku) used to be an animal-rights activist; now she's a loving wife one day and a master thief the next.
Takes a while to get going (when it started, I uncharitably assumed that it was designed to suit an episodic format with an interchangeable protagonist), but Whedon always writes his characters well. Superb.
