Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Rodriguez and Tarantino's homage to the grindhouse double-feature was split into its component films -- Planet Terror, Death Proof -- and given a straight-to-DVD release here in Australia, but those wonderful, wonderful people at Dendy got in an American print for a short theatrical run. It was worth the wait.
Rodriguez's Planet Terror is a delightful exercise in outrageous excess, though could have done without all the testicles and melting genitalia. It's pretty much just mindless fun: all you really need to know is that a one-legged stripper kills hundreds of mutant zombies and you should be sold.
Death Proof is less accessible but rather more interesting. Rather more unpleasant, too: like The Devil's Rejects, the core lesson is that being cast in the role of the victim is not a moral endorsement: out there in the audience, be careful what you wish for.
Fantastic.
