Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem, The Sea Inside) is one of the most terrifying movie psychopaths of all time, though -- like Nicole Kidman in The Hours, whose prosthetic nose was the first proboscis ever to win an Academy Award for acting -- much of the credit must go to his unsettling Prince Valiant haircut.
The film's thematic concerns are possible to overlook for most of the film (distracting explosions, etc.), but the unconventional climax and dénouement bring philosophy to the forefront. Whether this lesson in bitter cynicism is worth experiencing is another question entirely.
Regardless of content, it's a magnificent example of the art and craft of film-making. The script is brilliant; it's perfectly shot and cut. The actors are superb, most surprisingly Josh Brolin.
It's not really "deep", I don't think; it serves you right if you try and infer too much. It's a tiny, perfect gem, with a cold and crystalline heart. Isn't it beautiful?
