Broadcast News is, chiefly, a romantic comedy, a love triangle between Jane (Holly Hunter), a successful but unhappy television producer, her scruffy but intelligent best friend Aaron (Albert Brooks), and slick new anchorman Tom (William Hurt).
But glib genre labels don't do Broadcast News justice. It isn't a limp-wristed feel-good rom-com; it's an effective satire of television news and a realistic look at the hypocrisies of life and love. If not as pleasant to watch as its less intelligent brethren, it's a thousand times more honest.
