The first hour or so of Die Hard 3 is utter brilliance. The second half, alas, is overstuffed with unnecessary twists and even unnecessary characters -- utterly bizarre that Katya is played by Sam Phillips, musician best known to me for the Gilmore Girls soundtrack; the character could have been removed entirely and had no impact on either the film or her career.
Reportedly the script was stuck in development hell for years and the ending rewritten several times: it shows. This is a good Die Hard installment that might have been an all-time classic if it hadn't had to be changed to accommodate John McClane. Oh well.
