Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
A gay, Jewish cabaret owner (Robin Williams) and his partner Albie (Nathan Lane) pretend to be straight for the parents of their son Val (Dan Futterman) when he brings home fiancée Barbara (Calista Flockhart) and her parents, notably arch-conservative Senator Keeley (Gene Hackman).
The characters are lovable and it's rare to see Williams get to play straight-man; he's the serious one next to the flamboyant Lane. The portrayal of gay stereotypes is far from what would be considered acceptable in the 2020s: I give it some slack for its obvious affection and positive message but would hesitate to recommend it to anyone sensitive about LGBTQ representation.
