Slick thriller about an amnesiac secret agent. Nothing to get excited about, but better than average.

Noted recently that The Bourne Ultimatum, third in the trilogy, is considered the best; I'd given up by then but thought I better refresh my memory.

Identity, first in the series, has got pretty good action, but it's that one step short of greatness because that's all it's got. Partly it's because making Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) a blank slate means it's hard to make him likeable or memorable: just a generic, white-bread, thoroughly interchangeable all-American action hero. Neither does Bourne's quest to uncover his memories have quite the same urgency for the audience, who of course must already know the broad strokes. (Compare Regarding Henry, to name another film with an amnesiac protagonist, where the audience shares in crucial (re)discoveries.) Its most interesting aspects by far involve the politics of the CIA, which I am hopeful get touched on more in the sequels.
