Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
It's both rare and unwelcome to find a Jackie Chan film in which guns feature so prominently. The trademark kung-fu and stunts are still present, most notably a spectacular sequence aboard a speeding bus, but it's also halfway to John Woo. Guns! Car chases! Explosions!
The plot that strings together the action is a dreadfully serious one, taking on police corruption and murderous crime lords, amongst other things. There's nothing wrong with serious action films, though Chan isn't known for them; the problem is that Police Story mixes its seriousness with ridiculous slapstick. There's even a pie-in-the-face gag. The result is an uneven mess, with jokes one moment and impassioned speeches the next.
There's a lot there to like, it's just a pity that it was all crammed into one film.
