Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Charming 80s classic that I missed by a few years (I was too young). The eponymous heroes, a gang of boisterous youngsters including Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, stumble across both a villainous crime family and, eventually, a lost treasure.
There are elements of melancholic coming-of-age here -- as the film opens, the boys know that their homes are soon to be foreclosed to make way for a golf course, splitting them apart forever. But one of the things that makes it so charming is that this, like any semblance of realism, is arrested by the success of their adventure (their discovered pirate loot is sufficient to make the mortgage payments).
Such a movie made today would inevitably include one boy from a broken home, or poverty, or abuse; The Goonies is happy families and happy endings all round.
If I'd seen this in primary school, it would've been like a dream come to life -- kids like me, having an adventure like Indiana Jones! By now it would be the ultimate nostalgic experience.
As an adult coming to it for the first time, there isn't much of interest to it, but as a cultural touchstone it's worth seeing once.
