John Merrick (Charles Coburn), richest man in the world, goes undercover as a shoe salesman at a department store he owns to uncover union ringleaders. It's not bad, but even a few days later all I can remember is the faint praise that the bit with the false moustache was amusing, and that their crowded, cramped visit to Coney Island was a vision of hell and oh god even thinking about it gives me the shivers.

Or: meh, but perhaps interesting as an explicitly political artifact of the labour movement.

Aha, my vague feeling of deja vu while watching this film was because I'd already seen it. I liked it more the second time around: you just can't wait for those who wrong him to get their comeuppance.
