Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Marilynne Robinson (which I read many years ago for a class), about two girls raised in the 1950s in Fingerbone, Idaho. This is a wonderful film with haunting portrayal of abandonment, innocence, and yearning for freedom. Sylvie (Christine Lahti) is a forerunner of the manic pixie dreamgirl, but as a real, rounded, damaged figure rather than a fantasy, placed in a circumstance where irresponsibility comes at a cost. A sensitive script, great performances, and just the right blend of dim interiors and sweeping vistas to capture the novel's transcendentalist sensibility. Wonderful.
