My experience with Persona did not encourage watching more Bergman, but with his recent passing it seemed appropriate to give him another chance. I'm glad I did. Self-consciously "meaningful" texts are often irritating, but The Seventh Seal pulls it off. Magnificent performances ensure that the film is engaging as a story, and at a deeper level it speaks eloquently on matters of life, death, love, faith, and more.
It's rare to find a so-called "must see" film that genuinely enriches the viewer's life, but this is one.
