Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Coney Island street gang The Warriors attend a meeting of New York gangs convened by Cyrus, a sort of messianic leader who intends to unite them all and take over the city. When his assassination is blamed on the Warriors, they face a dangerous journey home.
This is a weird, weird movie, a violent fever dream about colourful fantasy gangs -- the Warriors themselves are dressed in a uniform of sleeveless leather vests; at one point they are set upon by the Baseball Furies, with baseball uniforms, bats and bright facepaint. It reminds of nothing so much as a shounen manga.
I can see how this might have been compelling and novel in 1979, when its comic-book logic applied to a realistic setting was more novel. If you squint, the stilted, affected dialogue is like something out of an epic poem. But 40 years on, most of the appeal is in its retro charm.
