Magnificent. What keeps it from perfection is that Gelsomina's innocence seems, at times, calculated -- it feels like acting. Giulietta Masina can't be blamed, but it does have the unfortunate effect of bringing you back down to Earth from the beautiful, melancholy place you had been taken. Wonderful.
