Peter Medak's satire of the British aristocracy, from a screenplay by Peter Barnes, is summed up early on in an exchange between Sir Charles Gurney (William Mervyn) and Dr. Herder (Michael Bryant), the psychiatrist treating his nephew Jack (Peter O'Toole), the new Earl:

Charles: What about Jack?
Dr. Herder: Remember he's suffering from delusions of grandeur. In reality he's an earl, an English aristocrat, a member of the ruling class. Naturally, he's come to believe there's only one person grander than that: the Lord God Almighty Himself.
Charles: Are you English?
Dr. Herder: No.
Charles: Ah.

Jack, you see, thinks he is Jesus.

In one insulting and wickedly funny sequence after another, the upper class are shown to be insane, scheming, prone to cronyism, suffering delusions of grandeur, and the decrepit remnant of a long-dead Imperialist dream. I dare say I'd feel differently if I were an aristocrat, but it seems eerily accurate, almost documentary-like...

It's entertaining and strangely compelling, albeit far too long. Definitely worth a look.
