Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Embarrassingly propagandist biopic of Alvin York (Gary Cooper), Tennessee farmer turned war hero. The first half shows York as an alcoholic who comes good and finds Jesus; eventually putting aside his conscientious objections (that the good book forbids killing) he puts his skills as a sharpshooter to good use.
Possibly I am so taken against this film because it's so close to the current mood of "Make America Great Again". York's aww-shucks background hearkens back to the American myth of the rugged frontiersman; the way he's so easily and transparently manipulated into believing that he's part of a righteous holy war is terrifying to see treated a heroic character growth.
