I struggle with the contemporary narrative that The Godfather is a perfect film, or the greatest film of all time, but it's also true that the last time I saw it was on a 7" seat-back screen on an overnight international flight where I was half-dead from exhaustion. It was good to revisit in a better setting.
The ensemble scenes in particular are wonderful, but I've become convinced that part of its sustained appeal is simply the way it prefigures the shift over the following decades to expansive, cinematic television. At three hours it just has more time to pack in the character development that makes it more than just a gangster film.
It must have been a deplorable lack of taste that made me think that this sweeping mob epic was a mere 7/10.
