Film Illiterate, wherein the proprietor records movies seen, and sporadic progress through assorted lists of the "best". Originally started after regretfully renting something forgettable for the third time. I've forgotten what, but never again! A tedious endeavour since 2005. Hello. 🙂
Utterly fantastic deconstruction of the hicksploitation "cabin in the woods" genre of horror. A group of pretty young teenagers on a camping holiday notice a pair of creepy hillbillies and, having been primed by the story of a massacre in the same woods two decades previously, become convinced that they have kidnapped and/or killed Allison (Katrina Bowden). One by one, they start dying in increasingly gruesome ways...
Meanwhile, Tucker and Dale (Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine) are headed to the cabin in the woods that Tucker has bought to realize his dream of having a holiday home. Out night fishing, they notice a group of teenagers skinny-dipping, one of whom falls into the water and hits her head. They pull her out and bandage her up, but instead of coming to get her as expected, Allison's friends seem determined to act out a gruesome suicide pact...
Unlike Cabin in the Woods, which twisted the genre but did not quite shatter it, Tucker and Dale is unmistakeably a comedy. The dark happenings contrast delightfully with Dale's naivete -- he is mostly concerned with his crush on Allison -- and Tucker's exasperation. It's a delightfully black farce of misapprehension and mistaken identity. Twists later in the story are a little less believable, albeit necessary to drive the story forward, but the package as a whole is a sheer delight.
