Incredible How He Can

Classic James Whale adaptation of the H.G. Wells story where, like Socrates and the Ring of Gyges, a young man's invisibility has monstrous results.

The acting is wooden, especially the minor players; thankfully, Claude Rains is excellent as Griffin despite spending most of the film either invisible or wrapped in bandages.

I feel a little more sympathetic towards the awful Kevin Bacon vehicle Hollow Man, incidentally, now that I've seen another invisibility treatment inexplicably grant superhuman strength. It's an apt comparison in more ways than one: this film too is notable primarily for its special effects. 73 years on and they're holding up remarkably well.

And both movies were quite amusing too, I suppose, though only in this one was it actually intended. (Hollow Man was just laughably bad.) It's strange to be laughing at a man with a cat moments before another character is strangled to death, but it works, and makes the whole thing more engaging.

Not quite as good as Frankenstein and Bride of same, but definitely worth a look.
