Polanksi's portrayal of a young woman (Catherine Deneuve) struck by debilitating terror hit me harder today than it might have; I've been reading about rape. It's not easy for a man to understand how even a compliment can seem like a threat when sexuality is linked, inextricably, with violence.
The narrative leaves something to be desired, but Repulsion hits hard with sheer atmosphere -- a powerful and extremely unpleasant piece.
